About Calligraphy (Sho-do)

Calligraphy has been transmitted along with writing from China since ancient times, and over its long history, it has integrated with the spiritual culture of the Japanese people and developed as a traditional culture of Japan.
The appeal of calligraphy is not just looking at a model and writing beautiful letters. It is an art that can improve your thinking and concentration, and hone your sensitivity and expressiveness.

There is also the real thrill of practicing difficult characters over and over again and feeling the effort and progress you make.

There are so many different things that you can practice through calligraphy, such as expressions that make the most of the moment, and techniques that can be cultivated over time.

The black of the ink, the white of the Japanese paper, and the lines of the brush are the only things that are created in each moment, and it is an art that most expresses the artist’s individuality. If you can experience calligraphy and touch even a little bit of its essence, you will be able to experience the spirit and culture of Japan.

Why not try writing your own characters with a brush or your favorite characters to create your own artwork.

Atelier Kakko’s calligraphy experience allows you to do the following:

①know the letters

There are three types of characters in Japanese: Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana.
We will choose a character that interests you and give you a lecture on the basic writing, brushstrokes, and shapes.
After learning the letters, let’s choose whether to create your own work using letters (②) or ink art (③).

②Write letters

In Japan, there is a concept called kotodama, and people wish for their ideals to come true by expressing them in words or writing them.
Why not write down your wishes and thoughts that you would like to realize?

③Draw with ink art

It’s difficult to understand from just one experience, but once you come into contact with the ever-changing colors, smudges, and blurs of ink, and the diverse expressive power of a brush, your sensibilities will be stimulated and your powers will increase. Please experience the infinite possibilities of expression that calligraphy has.
