仮名文字(Kanamoji)
In Japan, calligraphy written using the unique Japanese syllabary known as “kana” is called Kana Shodo (Japanese Kana Calligraphy).
“Kana” refers to characters that originated in China as kanji but were simplified during the Heian period to create a uniquely Japanese writing system. There are various forms of kana, including hiragana, katakana, manyogana, and sōgana. Kana written with a fine brush (kobun) is known for its graceful flow and soft impression, embodying the essence of Japanese beauty and sensibility.

Workshop Overview
You will begin by practicing basic fine-brush strokes and receive a model of the “Iroha Song.” Through this, you will learn the fundamentals of kana writing.
During the session, we will focus on essential points so that you can also practice writing your name in kana. Characters that cannot be mastered during the class can be practiced at home.
At the end of the workshop, you will complete your own piece by writing your name in kana on special paper such as shikishi (square calligraphy board) or sensu (folding fan).
Experience the refined beauty of kana calligraphy—the delicate brush lines, the harmony between characters and empty space, and the quiet elegance that defines Japanese aesthetics.
