On the calendar, this season follows Risshu (the beginning of autumn), and in Japan, the cool sound of the cicadas’ calls begins to echo in the evenings, creating a picturesque summer scene 🎐

Unlike the clamorous buzz of cicadas during the day, their clear sound is somehow melancholic, a signal of autumn’s approach.
This summer has been so intensely hot that even the sound of the cicadas seems weak, overwhelmed by the heat. However, since Risshu has passed, I feel that there are a few more moments of cool relief this week.
Then again, I’m taking a break from the concrete jungle of the city and staying at my parents’ house surrounded by greenery, so that might just be why I feel that way 😉
Calligraphy is an art form that reflects the seasons not only through the meaning of the words but also through the brushstrokes and the space on the paper.

While there isn’t a strong sense of late summer yet, it might be interesting to use calligraphy to capture the fading sound of autumn on paper as we transition from late summer to early autumn.
